Blaine Afton Smallwood, 94, of Pleasant Hill, died peacefully December 26, 2008. He was born April 3, 1914 at Raymondville, Mo., to Henry B. and Grace B. Smallwood.
He married Dona Lucille Basden, August 24, 1942, while serving in the Navy; a union that lasted over 60 years until she preceded him in death in 2003.
Afton was an ardent Bible student and lived the last 46 years of his life according to Bible principles as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He passed away with the knowledge that he will again be with his family when the earth is returned to a paradise condition where sickness and death will be no more (Rev. 21:3,4).
The Smallwoods raised four children who share with them the Bible's promise of the resurrection.
Coming from a family of talented musicians, Afton loved country music and thoroughly enjoyed sharing his musical talents with family and friends.
Afton will be lovingly remembered by his family; sister, Mavis G. Hopkins of Port St. Lucie, FL; son, E. Keith Smallwood and his wife, Katherine, of Belton; daughters, Donna J. Weed and her husband, James, of Jefferson City, Sue Buckley and her husband, Dennis, of Pleasant Hill, Kathy D. Mahon and her husband, Dennis, of Pleasant Hill; eight grandchildren, John Smallwood, Kathy Smallwood Moore, Troy and Sean Rand, Lesli Buckley Rice, Nicki Buckley Owens, Nathan Buckley and Sara Buckley; nine great-grandchildren, Devon Lukenbill, Amanda Jenkins, Bethany and Matthew Moore, Alec Rand, Blaine C. Smallwood, Jesse Rice and Alex-Andre'a Owens; and three great-great-grandchildren, Luke and Wyatt Jenkins and Riley A. Rand.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lowell Smallwood; and one sister, Shirley Hitz.
A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 821 Magnolia Place, Jefferson City. Gary Carey will officiate.
