Honoré Picotte was a member of the fur-trading "French Company," and later was chief agent of the fur-trading Upper Missouri Outfit on the Missouri River. Therese, his legitimate stateside wife in St. Louis, was ignorant of the two Sioux "country wives" he kept during his trading days. He had "married" the daughter of Yankton chief Struck-by-the-Ree. He later "married" Eagle Woman, also a Sioux, who attained prominence as a spokesperson for Indian-white relations. Picotte deserted her in 1852 when he retired and returned permanently to Therese in St. Louis. (Information provided by Mr. Ray Wood)
