JOHN W. BRYARLY was born on 11 February 1826 in Frederick County, Virginia to Mjr. David H. Bryarly & Elizabeth "Eliza" Brent. John's grandfather was an ensign in the American Revolution, and his Great-Grandfather, Thomas Bryarly, Built "Walnut Grove" in Frederick County (present day Clark County) Virginia and offered Patriotic Service through Material Aid.

Many of the Bryarly family connections are documented in family letters preserved at Duke University in The Samuel Bryarly Papers; "Records of Ante-Bellum Southern Plantations from the Revolution through the Civil War: Series F, Selections from the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library, Duke University, Part 4: North Carolina and Virginia Plantations: Samuel Bryarly Papers, 1787-1884, Frederick County, Virginia." Samuel Bryarly was John W. Bryarly's Grand-Uncle.

During the Civil War John served in the Union Army. John was a prominent contractor for many years.

John married Maria Louise Brogham on 8 October 1856 in Frederick County, Virginia, and they had FOUR children that are known of:

Elizabeth "Bettie" M. Bryarly (1858-1947),
Katherine "Kate" Lee Bryarly (1861-1936),
Melissa Malisicary Bryarly (1863-1885), and
Susan "Susie" Bryarly (1871-1885).

John passed away on 18 January 1903 in Frederick County, Virginia, after a brief illness, and was buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Frederick County (present day Winchester City), Virginia.
