Politician. Oklahoma City attorney. Oklahoma State Legislator (1932-1938). Lt. Commander in the US Navy during WW II. Special advisor to Governor Leon "Red" Phillips. Four time Democratic candidate for Oklahoma governor (1946-1956). Forced closest statewide race in Oklahoma history (850 votes) (1950). Won Democratic nomination in 1954 but lost to Governor Raymond Gary in run-off election. Governor Gary's sister Mary Jane was married to Coe's cousin Clarence C. Coe of Madill. At his death, Daily Oklahoman, state's largest newspaper, declared "Fiery Politician William Coe Dies With Goal Unfulfilled." "The Aroma of Politics, Gary-Coe, Raymond Gary and the Election of 1954," "The Chronicles of Oklahoma" (Spring 1988).
