Joseph Toland, (1804-1863), was born in Gilders Creek, South Carolina.
He was first married in 1828, in Alabama, had 7 children, and migrated to Lowndes County, Mississippi in 1836.
He became a wealthy planter…also a widower…and in 1847 married Emily Wallis (born, 1824) 6 children were born of this union.
In 1848, Emily's father, Maj. Joseph Wallis and family migrated to Chappell Hill, Washington County, Texas.
In 1860, Joseph Toland and family (10 children) migrated to Chappell Hill just in time for the 1860 census which listed him as a planter worth $224,000. (in 1999 dollars, that's the equivalent of $4,000,000.). Joseph's son
Albert Wallis Toland (born 1849) attended preparatory classes at Soule University in 1860, and later became a physician.
Joseph Toland died in 1863, and was buried in Chappell Hill's Masonic Cemetery.
