He was a son of James McGavock and wife Lucinda Ewing.
Oscar Hugh McGavock (No. 89) Grays "The McGavock Family" was born in 1825 on their home place a few miles north of Franklin, Williamson Co. TN on the Harpeth River. The McGavock Cemetery where his parents are buried is nearby. His only brother died when he was 8 years old and his father died later same year. There was an inventory and sale of the estate after his mothers death. Among items bought by Oscar Hugh were a set of silver spoons. The name 'Oscar' which has also been used by descendants came from Oscar Hugh's mother's brother (his uncle) Oscar Smith Ewing who died as a child. 'Hugh' came from his grandfather McGavock.
He married America Nancy Bryan on May 22,1845 in Williamson Co. TN. They were on the 1850 census of Fayetteville Co. TN with their first two children. On the 1860 census of Haywood Co. TN, District 14, America Nancy McGavock was shown with her first 5 children. There was a Federal Mortality Schedule taken on the census year of 1860 to look at the representative causes of death. Oscar Hugh showed up on this and was shown as age 35, a farmer, died in February of 1860 of pneumonia after illness of 21 days. They lived in District 14 not far from Chestnut Bluff. This became Crockett a County, District 10 in 1871. We were fortunate to find a local contact and the community in which they lived in 1860. He tells of a local cemetery, Dean, that had the monuments bulldozed and the ground leveled when the new owner bought the property. Presently there are only 2 monuments showing, Asa Dean and wife. Oscar Hugh's son was working for a previous owner, Asa Dean, on the 1870 census.
There were no land transactions and Oscar and America may have been leasing from a relative. To locate their 1860 farm we found their neighbor, John T. Moore and Minerva who stayed in the area and are buried at Archers Chapel Cemetery. After Oscar died in Feb of 1860, America was left with a house full of kids and one on the way. The Moore's being their neighbor were surely helpful to America in burying her husband. We feel that she didn't have the money for an engraved monument.
The Civil War disrupted many families and no one was there to care for the graves. America found another man with children who needed a wife and they combined families and moved on to AR. Their last child, Napoleon born in August of 1860 was not on this census because he was born after 'census day' that year. Napoleon was known by his descendants as a seventh son who never saw his father and this turned out to be correct. He was also known as 'Dock' to all who knew him. Dock had a brother named Oscar Hugh and Dock named a son Oscar Hugh. (My mother was a McGavock and Oscar Hugh McGavock 1825-1860 is my great-grandfather-D. Kirk)
