Olen E, Gillan, retired businessman of Concordia, died Saturday, Dec. 18, at St, Joseph Hospital. He was 86.
Mr. Gillan was born to Robert and Laura Gillan on a farm near Friend, Neb., April 4, 1890. He grew up on a farm at Pleasant Ridge, community life centered around the Pleasant Ridge Church. For entertainment there were parties around the neighborhood and picnic at Beaver Crossing each fall. Olen had a fine-looking horse and buggy with the harness decked out with colored rings. Olen and Edna were married on March 4th, 1913 at the home of Aunt Mary (Lunney) Ackles seven miles north of Exeter, Neb. Olen and Edna lived at Grandpa Gillan’s farm. At the end of 1915, Olen and Edna purchased their first automobile a Willys Overland.
In 1923, Olen and brother Clifford purchased the Jones Bakery on Sixth Street in Concordia. By 1930’s the Gillan family included two boys and three girls. The Gillan Brothers Bakery had become one of Concordia’s most successful business and relocated to Seventh Street. For thirty years, the Gillan brothers owned and operated other bakeries in Beloit, and North Platte, Neb.
While Olen was active in the bakery business, he still had found time to lend a hand in community affairs. He was an avid worker and supporter of the local Ban Johnson baseball team, and he was one of the citizens instrumental in installation of the floodlights at the Fairgrounds Park. Through the years he traveled many miles to see ballgames or participate in bowling tournaments. He has been a member of the Elks Lodge for 35 years. He also was a farmer and rancher until his retirement.
Mr. Gillan is survived by two sons: Glen B. Gillan and Robert F. Gillan, both of Concordia; three daughters; Vie, now Mrs. W. Van Alexander, Topeka; Shirley, now Mrs. Robert T. Anderson, Woodland, Calif.; and Lois, now Mrs., Jerome Chandler, Sterling: one sister, Mrs. Ray Lindsey, Concordia: a brother, Verne Gillan, Denver, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter, Opal and a granddaughter, Carol Jo Gillan.
