Michael Macauley died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at his home at Meadow Ridge Independent Living.

Mr. Macauley, 90, was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Barbara C. Macauley, in March 2010.

Born April 21, 1921 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mr. Macauley was the youngest of five children of Capt. Edward Macauley Jr., a distinguished U.S. naval officer, and Jean Oliver Macauley, daughter of United States Senator George T. Oliver of Pennsylvania. The family relocated frequently, but Mr. Macauley was raised primarily in Hillsborough, Calif., and Geneva, Switzerland.

He graduated from The Cate School in Carpinteria, Calif., in 1940 and later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Mr. Macauley was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from March 1943 through January 1946, and was awarded the Purple Heart for leg injuries suffered in France.

As a civilian, Mr. Macauley worked in engineering for Lockheed Aircraft; as chief purser on Matson Cruise Lines between California and Hawaii; and for 20 years in national sales management for the Atlantic Products Corporation in Trenton, N.J. In 1972, he co-founded MW Service Associates, a firm that managed U.S. military sales for sporting goods manufacturers. He was a resident of Chapel Hill, N.C., for 28 years until moving to Redding in July 2009.

Mr. Macauley is survived by his sons, Jack Macauley of Wilton and Michael Perrin Macauley of Flagstaff, Ariz., six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery adjacent to his parents. Donations in memory of Mr. Macauley may be sent c/o Trinity School for Ministry, 311 Eleventh Street, Ambridge PA 15003.
