Amanda Vaughn Garriott was the daughter of William Garriott, who was the son of Ambrose Garriott(Find A Grave Memorial# 84289238), a Revolutionary soldier [and Elizabeth Blankenbaker]. He came from [Germanna Colony,]Virginia. [Her mother was Rebecca Vaughn, who was a twin to Nancy Vaughn.]

William Garriott was born in 1783. His younger brother, Simeon, was born in 1790. Frank, a son of Simeon was born in 1849 and still living on the old home farm in Gibson Township, Washington County, Indiana in 1933. At 84 years of age he stood 6'2" tall, drove his own car and did not wear glasses.

Amanda Garriott, at the age of 16, married John C. Thompson in Washington County, Indiana [1827]. She died [1853] [giving birth to twins, Cora and Alice, both buried in her arms. It is believed that she may have had three twin births, but only one child of each may have survived birth].

"Mother used to tell me that in the early days, her father[Amanda's husband, John C Thompson] was a Presbyterian, as no doubt he was all his life. But he gave the use of an old building on his place to either the Methodist or the United Brethren to hold services there, but his wife [Amanda] was not permitted to attend them. As I understand it, she would go out as near the church, without going to it, and sit on a log--when they sang, she would sing, when they prayed, she would kneel to her log also to pray. And in that way she would not be defying her husband, I suppose.

"I think your Great-Grandmother died when she was 42 or 44, with a twin baby on either arm. She had 18 children in her life...." Excerpt from a Letter from Stacy Elliott Verdenius to a cousin, Beulah Thompson Golden.
