Professional baseball player. Dougherty pitched for clubs in the pre-Negro leagues from 1909 to 1918. He was regarded as one of the best left-handed pitchers in black baseball during his peak years and was referred to as the "Black Marquard," after future Hall of Famer Rube Marquard. Dougherty became the star left-handed pitcher for the Leland Giants in 1909 after stepping in and replacing an injured Rube Foster during the championship series against the St. Paul Gophers. He allowed only eight hits in 27 innings during the series. Later that year, he lost a 1-0 contest to Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown and the Chicago Cubs. In 1910, Dougherty teamed with Frank Wickware to lead the clubs to a nearly perfect record all season. By 1911, the Leland Giants were renamed the Chicago American Giants, and Dougherty stayed with the team through 1914 when he joined the Chicago Giants. He made his final appearances at the end of the decade back with the American Giants.
