Driven to despondency by financial loss and mentally deranged by insomnia, Richardson shot himself in the head at his St. Louis home. He was the father of Hadley Richardson, first wife of author Ernest Hemingway. Richardson was one of five heirs to the Richardson Drug Company and inherited a huge fortune. He speculated in wheat, but his investments were seldom successful.
