She attended school in Petersburg. On June 25, 1950 she was united in marriage to Bernard Nelson in Fremont, Nebraska. The couple lived in Columbus where Darlene worked for Becton-Dickinson, A & M Veterinarian Clinic, and Dale Electronics. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Nebraska State Genealogical Society, and Kinseekers. Darlene enjoyed woodcarving, pottery restoration, collecting antiques, genealogical studies, and computer work.
