Marysville Daily Appeal - Fri 12/16/1887, p3 - Death of J. M. Abbott - John M. Abbott died in this city yesterday morning about 1 o'clock at the residence of his son-in-law, N. D. Rideout. He had been failing very rapidly during the last few months, and his death was not unexpected. - The funeral will take place from the Rideout residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon. - John M. Abbott was a native of Ohio. He was 75 years old last April. He came to California in 1849, and his family arrived three years later. For many years Mr. Abbott's home was Oak Hill ranch in the foothills, where he was one of the first growers of fruit. Since that period he was engaged in farming and fruit-growing at various places in this valley. He was fond of rural pursuits, and took much interest in horticultural experiment. No one has done more in this part of the State to demonstrate the advantages of thorough cultivation of the soil. - Mr. Abbott was a man of very quiet, retiring manners, and respected by all who knew him. His wife was buried here twenty years ago. He leaves two sons, Augustus Abbott, the Railroad Commissioner and Ambrose Abbott, of Los Angeles, and two daughters, Mrs. N. D. Rideout, of this city, and Mrs. Annie Ellsworth, of Los Angeles. His brother, H. B. Abbott, is living at Big Meadows. - The deceased was a member of the Methodist church for a quarter of a century past. About 1856 he was Superintendent of Schools for this county.
