John Masterson Abbott was the son of Joseph J. Abbott, Jr. and Rhoda Masterson Abbott of Brown County, Ohio.

Marysville Daily Appeal - Fri 12/16/1887, p3 - Death of J. M. Abbott - John M. Abbott died in this city yesterday morning about 1 o'clock at the residence of his son-in-law, N. D. Rideout. He had been failing very rapidly during the last few months, and his death was not unexpected. - The funeral will take place from the Rideout residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon. - John M. Abbott was a native of Ohio. He was 75 years old last April. He came to California in 1849, and his family arrived three years later. For many years Mr. Abbott's home was Oak Hill ranch in the foothills, where he was one of the first growers of fruit. Since that period he was engaged in farming and fruit-growing at various places in this valley. He was fond of rural pursuits, and took much interest in horticultural experiment. No one has done more in this part of the State to demonstrate the advantages of thorough cultivation of the soil. - Mr. Abbott was a man of very quiet, retiring manners, and respected by all who knew him. His wife was buried here twenty years ago. He leaves two sons, Augustus Abbott, the Railroad Commissioner and Ambrose Abbott, of Los Angeles, and two daughters, Mrs. N. D. Rideout, of this city, and Mrs. Annie Ellsworth, of Los Angeles. His brother, H. B. Abbott, is living at Big Meadows. - The deceased was a member of the Methodist church for a quarter of a century past. About 1856 he was Superintendent of Schools for this county.

Marysville Daily Appeal - Sat. 12/17/1887, p3 - Funeral of J. M. Abbott - The funeral of the late John M. Abbott took place yesterday afternoon from the residence of his son-in-law, N. D. Rideout. A large concourse of the friends of Mr. Abbott and his family assembled at the residence and listened to the sermon by the Rev. J. E. Anderson. At the conclusion of the services at the house, the funeral procession, which was composed of a large number of carriages containing several hundred people, was formed and proceeded to the cemetery, where the remains were buried in the family plat. The following gentlemen acted as pall-bearers: J. R. Garrett, W. G. Murphy, George Ohleyer, J. F. Eastman, A. J. Cumberson and A. J. Batchelder. - Among the relatives who attended the funeral were Railroad Commissioner Abbott, and Ambrose Abbott and Mrs. Ellsworth, of Los Angeles.

Gravesite Details From D GARCIA: SIERRA VIEW WASN'T OPENED UNTIL 1923, AND THE SECTION IN WHICH THEY ARE LOCATED CONTAINS GRAVES OF PEOPLE WHO FOR THE MOST PART, WERE ORIGINALLY BURIED ELSEWHERE - PROBABLY THE OLD MARYSVILLE OR YUBA CITY CEMETERIES.
