Clifton McCree, who had been dismissed from his city job of cleaning beaches opened fire on his former colleagues early this morning, killing five of them and critically injuring another before turning the gun on himself. He had worked for the City Parks Department for 18 years. He returned to the office trailer 14 months after his discharge and shot the employees as they gathered to pick up their assignments.

Those killed were Joseph Belotto, Mark Bretz, Kenneth Brunjes, Joseph Clifford and Donald Moon. Lelan Brookins was the only survivor.

Joseph Belotto, 40 of Pompano Beach, FL died Friday, February 9, 1996. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 28, 1955 to Joseph Belotto and Joan Westburgh.

He was a resident of Long Island, NY and came to this area over 20 years ago. He was a Beach Maintenance IV employee with the Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department for 20 years.

Survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; sons Nicholas, age 6, Jeremy, age 3 and Jonathon, age 10 months; parents, Joseph and Joan Belotto of Margate, FL; and sister, Suzanne DiSalvo of Tampa, FL.

Visitation from 6-9 PM Monday, February 12, at the funeral home with a Wake Service at 8 PM. Mass 9 AM Tuesday, February 13, at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, 3331 NE 10 Terr., Pompano Beach, followed by interment at Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery.
