Jurist, Pioneer
He was founder of Galesville, Gale College, one of the framers of the Wisconsin constitution, and an organizer of Trempealeau County. He lived on a farm during his boyhood and divided his time between working on the farm and attending school. In March, 1839, he commenced reading law at the waterbury center, Vermont, and was admitted to the bar in 1841. Soon after becoming a lawyer he came to the territory of Wisconsin, at Elkhorn. He spent a year as the editor of the western star paper. He published the Wisconsin Farm Book in 1846. He entered public life and was elected to various offices. In 1847 he was sent to the Constitutional Convention, winning distinction on the judiciary committee. The same year, he was elected district attorney for his county, in 1851 he was elected to the state senate, and in 1856 judge of the sixth judicial district. In 1853 he purchased two thousand acres, and in 1854 procured from the state legislature the organization of the county of Trempealeau, with the location of the county seat at Galesville. At the same time, he obtained a charter for a university to be located in Galesville. As a historical writer he took high rank and wrote the papers "History of the Chippewa Nation of Indians" and "The Upper Mississippi, or Historical Sketches of the Introduction of Civilization in the Northwest". His health partially failed him in the summer of 1862, and the three following years he spent in the south and west in the service of the sanitary and christian commission. He had charge of the United States sanitary commission depot, on Morris Island, during the siege of Charleston. In all respects he was viewed as an estimable man, discharging every duty to the best of his ability.
