The family lived for a number of years in Butte, Montana which was Tom's home. Tom was a smelter worker in nearby Anaconda and then started a career as a public school teacher and principal.

In 1962 the family moved to Gibbons, Alberta, Canada (near Edmonton) where they taught school. Later moved west to Edson, Alberta for many years and retired there.

They then moved to Cardston in southern Alberta near the Montana border right across the street from the Alberta Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
