Son of Joshua Bradley and Nancy Ann Gardner, the oldest of seven children. His family moved to Gallatin, Sumner, Tennessee. At the age of 17, he joined the Tennessee Volunteers, served from Jun 18, 1812 to Apr 27, 1815. He received land for his military service and farmed it. By 1820, He moved to Randolph County, Illinois where he met and married Martha Hughes. They had 13 children, however only 6 reached maturity. After Martha died, he married Sarah Thom, they had 2 more children. After Sarah's death, he married for a 3rd time to Margaret Jordan. In 1861 he joined the 18th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He returned home after the war.

He was a Justice of the Peace, a fence viewer in Gognia TWP. Overseer of Bradley Road District,and served on County Juries in 1824-1826,1831-1832,1834-1839; From "Public Laws Enacted by Eleventh General Assembly" Jan 8,1840. That James Gillespie, James Bradley, John Moore, Benjamin F.Bradley, John Barrow, William Pike, Richard Bradley, Arthur Cross, John B.Burke, William Bradley are incorporated by name and style "President and Trustees of Shiloh College" Randolph County,Ill. James died at nearly 69 years old, having been one of Old Andy Jackson`s soldiers, an educator, a trustee of a college, a stonemason,and a Justice of the Peace.
