CHARLES H. M'EVOY TO BE BURIED SATURDAY
Prominent Citizen Killed Near Frostburg When His Auto Gets Beyond Control
The funeral of Charles H McEvoy, aged 51 years, a prominent citizen of Cumberland who was killed about 5:30 yesterday afternoon when the automobile he was driving struck a culvert and crashed into a fence one mile west of Frostburg will take place at 9 o'clock Saturday from St Patrick's of which he was a member. Burial will be in St Michael's Cemetery, Frostburg. Mr McEvoy was returning from a trip into Pennsylvania when the fatal accident occurred. Shortly before leaving Grantsville, he talked with William Kean, 210 Green St, who was preparing to come to the city. He departed before Mr McEvoy. Sometime later, Mr McEvoy came upon the Kean car that had stopped along the road to make repairs. Mr McEvoy stopped to inquire if he could be of any assistance and then left. Mr Kean said he saw nothing more of Mr McEvoy and did not learn of the accident until he reached Cumberland. He then recalled seeing the demolished car along the road, but it was so badly crushed that he thought it had been there for some time. It Is believed- that the brakes on Mr. McEvoy's car refused to hold when he began to descend the mountain. When it struck a short curve Mr. McEvoy is believed to have lost control of the machine, which skidded into the culvert and then bounded against the fence lodging on both culvert and fence. Mr. McEvoy was hurled 50 feet from where the car rested. William Powers, Frostburg, who was'working near the accident, heard the crash, as did Engel Speir who was at the Speir abattoir. When they reached Mr McEvoy's side, they found him in a dying condition with his skull crushed. He was put into a passing automobile to be taken to the Miner's Hospital at Frostburg, but he died en route. The body was brought to Cumberland by Undertaker John C Wolford and later taken to his home, Washington St. One theory of the accident is that the brakes on Mr. McEvoy's Ford car locked after he tried to get it in control and he was bounced out hy the machine as it was tilting wildly an descending the grade and as he was making a desperate effort to ditch it. Mr. McEvoy used the car in covering his territory as traveling salesman for the Windsor Broom Co of Hamburg, Pa. Mr. McEvoy was a charter member of Cumberland Council, No. 5S6, Knights of Columbus and Chief JusticeTuney, General Assembly Fourth Degree Knights. He also belonged to Cumberland Council, No. 179, United Commercial Travelers. He is survived by his wife, who was Mrs. Birdie Shearer, Frostbnrg, and two daughters, the Misses Sue Winter and Pauline McEvoy. Robert F McEvoy ,this city, is a brother, and Miss Marie McEvoy, is a niece.
