Berlin Sparling

Berlin L. Sparling was born October 4, 1920, in Taylorville, son of Lafayette and Ida Belle Mills Sparling. He married Catherine Andrighetti December 27, 1941, in St. Charles, MO.
Surviving are his wife; daughter, Jud (Larry) Stringer; grandchildren, Robyn Lazzarini, Debra (George) Yard and Ricci Lazzarini; step grandchildren, Sam Stringer, Sue Ellen Vince and Crissy Evans; great-grandchildren, Brandon (Erica) Estes, Jonathan, Matthew and Regan Yard,Samantha, Nicholas and Dezi Lazzarini; step great-grandchildren, Sammy, Shane, and Ryan Stringer, Abby aand Lauren Evans, Kevan and Noah Vince; sister, Helen Johnson; sister-in-law, Antonia Verardi; brother-in-law, James (Grace) Andrighetti and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eddy, Johnny Boy, Tom, Hershel and Alvin; sisters, Ethel Sparling, Mary Delaney, Josephine Schmiedeke, Lorraine Kelley, Ruby England and Shirley Gowdy; and nephews and nieces.
He served in the Army from 1942-1945 during World War II. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
Berlin L. Sparling, 91, of Taylorville, passed away at 7:22 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Taylorville Care Center.

He was born on October 4, 1920 in Taylorville the son of Lafayette and Ida Belle (Mills) Sparling. He grew up in Hewittville. Berlin married Catherine Andrighetti of Langleyville on December 27, 1941 in St. Charles, MO. He retired from Hopper Paper Mill and worked for the city of Taylorville for several years. He worked Webster Street Recycling Bins until the age of 88. He attended the First Presbyterian Church of Taylorville. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 and a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. He loved to fish and hunt. He was also a proud fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine; daughter, Judy (Larry) Stringer of Taylorville; grandchildren, Robyn Lazzarini of Decatur, Debra (George) Yard of Taylorville, and Ricci Lazzarini of Decatur; step-grandchildren, Sam Stringer, Sue Ellen Vince, both of Taylorville, and Crissy Evans of Kincaid; great-grandchildren, Brandon (Erica) Estes, Jonathon, Matthew and Regan Yard of Taylorville, Samantha, Nicholas and Dezi Lazzarini of Decatur; step-great-grandchildren, Sammy, Shane and Ryan Stringer of Florida, Abby and Lauren Evans of Kincaid, Kevin and Noah Vince of Taylorville; sister, Helen Johnson of Taylorville; sister-in-law, Antonia Verardi of Taylorville, brother-in-law, James (Greta) Andrighetti of Taylorville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, brothers, Eddy, Johnny Boy, Tom, Hershel and Alvin, sisters, Ethel Sparling, Mary Delaney, Josephine Schmiedeke, Lorraine Kelley, Ruby England and Shirley Gowdy, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012 at Sutton Memorial Home, Taylorville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012 at Sutton Memorial Home with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites. Rev. Charles Banning will officiate. Arrangements by Sutton Memorial Home, Taylorville.

Casket bearers were Brandon Estes, George Yard, Jonathon Yard, Matthew Yard, Ricci Lazzarini, Nicholas Lazzarini, and James Andrighetti.

Honorary bearers were Steve Sparling, Ron Verardi, John Porreca, Danny Gowdy, Terry Allen and Robert McCaslin.

Military graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion Post 73, VFW Post 4495, and Amvets Post 29.
