Richard Edwin Ballou Jr., 80, of Ashton died Aug. 7, 2004, at the Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg of injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born March 30, 1924, in Santa Ana, Calif., to Richard Edwin Ballou and Edith Letitia Fowler Ballou. He married Jane Tyler on March 4, 1949, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Dick was raised in Riverside, Calif. He developed a love for swing music early in his life, and he became a professional musician and educator to pursue that passion. He played in big bands in the Army during World War II. He formed several bands at Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, including the Y's Men Band. He also formed the Cougar Marching Band as director of bands at Brigham Young University. In addition to serving as a professor at BYU he also taught at BYU-Hawaii for 11 years. Most recently he helped form and conducted the Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra. He was a member of the LDS Church and served as bishop of the Port Townsend, Wash., LDS ward. He loved his children and grandchildren and most especially his wife.
He is survived by his children, Richard Tyler (Kristin Jean) Ballou of Rexburg, Lorri Stohl of Lynnwood, Wash., James Edwin (Christine) Ballou of West Valley, Utah, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Vicki, two sisters and a brother. Funeral services conducted Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Ashton LDS Stake Center by Bishop Michael Davidson. Graveside services held Thursday, August 12, 2004 at the Pleasant Grove, Utah, Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home of Rexburg and Baxter Funeral Home of Ashton.
