Esther Allen (Middle Name) Howland was known as the Mother of the American Valentine, although she herself never married. She created the modern Valentine's Day Card industry. The Howland family operated the largest book and stationery store in Worcester, Mass. There was a valentine card assembly line at the Howland home located at 16 Summer St in Worcester, MA. She popularized the lace valentine. Her company was the New England Valentine Co.-1879. The business was sold to George Whitney in 1881. Esther graduated from Mount Holyoke College about 1847. Esther fractured a femur, and had been confined to her bed for at least eight months, she died at her home at 9 Adams St in Quincy, where she lived with her brother.
