George A. Ramey, 68, of 31 Norman Drive, Shelby, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning in Shelby Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Oil Springs, KY to Nathaniel and Stella Mae (Salyers) Ramey. Mr. Ramey was a veteran of World War II. He retired from the Shelby Mutual Insurance Co. in 1978. He was also a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Shelby.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee (Click) Ramey, whom he married on March 2, 1946; a son, George Roger Ramey of Hollywood, CA; four daughters: Jannie Smith and Vickie Tackett, both of Shelby; Delores Moore of Tiro, and Kathy Fagg of Wichita Falls, Texas; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers: Edward Ramey of Riceville, KY, and William Ramey, of Prestonsburg, KY; three sisters: Garnet Horn of Amanda, Ohio; Audrey Gilbert of South Point, Ohio; and Jewel Ramey, of Paintsville, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Virginia Severns; and five sisters.

Calling hours are Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Herman Copley and the Rev. Monty Perry. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery.
