U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Georgia, in 1843, from the Medical College of Georgia, in 1844, then; practiced medicine, taught school and also in agricultural pursuits. Entering politics, he was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives in 1851 and was ordained as a Methodist Minister in 1857. During the Civil War, he served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army. After the war, he resumed as a minister and in agricultural pursuits. In 1875, he was elected as an Independent Democrat to the Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served in the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1884-90) and a trustee for the University of Georgia, (1886-92).
