Thomas went with his two eldest brothers to Southern Subdivision, Tippah, Mississippi. That is where I found him on the 1860 census. It says he is a school teacher. He must have came back to home NC when the Civil War began. His enlistment record says his residence is Richmond County, NC. He may have also used his mothers home as his place of residence.

Enlisted as a Private on 30 October 1861 at the age of 25
Promoted to Full 3rd Lieutenant on 30 Oct 1861
Enlisted in Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment North Carolina
Killed Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 26 Jun 1862 at Mechanicsville, VA.

The picture of the map of the battlefield shows the position of Thomas's division. Where it says Mechanicsville, go to the south and east and the 38th infantry can be seen directly under the name G. B. Anderson. It is much easier to see if you save the photo and enlarge it.

The Battle of Mechanicsville is also known as the Battle of Beaver Creek. It was the second battle of the Seven Days Battle. Almost 1500 confederate soldiers lost thier lives this day compared to 361 Union soldiers.
