He was a Lieutenant in the Civil War from 1861-1863. He served in the "Chattahoochee Beauregards," Company C, Tenth Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry.

He and his three brothers appear in the 1870 Sabine County, Texas census as merchants. They moved to Louisiana and established a General Store, probably in Robeline. His younger brother (James M H McCook) submitted the Federal application for a Post Office for Robeline, LA.

He died of "swamp fever" and his wife (Laura Ponder McCook) moved to Denton, Texas where her brother Silas Daniel Ponder was a District Attorney.
