According to his descendants, at age 16 "Dock" enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Spanish American War (6th Regt, Co D, US Volunteers). On July 27, 1899, he re-enlisted in the Army and served in the 37th Regt, Co H, US Volunteers during the Phillipine Insurrection. After contracting malaria, he returned to the Presidio in San Francisco in October, 1900, and was discharged in December of 1900.
Dock returned to Murray Co, GA and then married Cynthia Caroline Reed of TN about 1904. They had three daughters, Gertrude, Billie, & Naomi; and were apparently living in Tennessee when Cynthia died on June 17, 1915. She was reportedly buried at Willow Mount Cemetery in Bedford Co, TN. (All three of these daughters later moved to and remained in or around Danville, VA.) In May of 1916, William Adolphus Whitener married a second time, to Printie Anne Mullinax of Murray Co, GA. They had five children.
