You are probably used to skimming the obituaries and seeing the same cookie cutter memorials that look like they were poured from a similar mold. None of them any less meaningful... Just very standard and traditional. While I have nothing against the format, when god made my Grandmother... He broke the mold. She was absolutely one of a kind. So I too feel as though I need to break the mold and provide a memorial that is much more suited to her.
For all who met Nadine, there were two choices... You either loved her (as most did) or you didn't like her. Either way, she never let it bother her. She was a very outspoken, opinionated and independent woman who threw no punches. She was never afraid to tell anyone exactly what she thought and she always stood true to her beliefs, no matter what anyone thought.
She was an amazing cook... Nearly famous in Lake Quinault where she cooked in several restaurants over the years including the "Lake Quinault Lodge", "Rain Forest Resort Village", "JJ's Restaurant/JJ's In-n-Out" the "Amanda Park Restaurant" and the "The Snack Bar" at the Quinault Mercantile.
She was very well known for her unparalleled "Clam Chowder", her "Fruit Salad" which was a holiday must, her "Baked Beans" which were enjoyed by many at family gatherings and also Claude's favorite... Chocolate Pie!
Nadine was a very kind and giving person and she would do anything that she could to help someone if she had the means. But you never crossed her, and if you did, it was the one and only opportunity that you would ever have. She was very old fashioned in her beliefs and very set in her ways and she could hold a grudge like no other.
She was married to Max Manning, a service man stationed overseas in the 1950's and was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Maxine Parker (Hoquiam, WA) and Jaydine Parker.
On June 6, 1963, after somewhat of a storybook meeting & relationship, she married the love of her life and soulmate, John Place, in Long Beach, California after they fell in love while she was employed as the nanny for his three daughters. Their marriage added three more wonderful stepdaughters to her family, including Kathy Lutz (Lake Quinault, WA), Sandra Place-Kohler (Lacey, WA) and Beverly Place-Fisher (Sumner, WA).
Growing up, her life was far from easy, but that upbringing led her to lead a simple life and always be happy no matter how little she had. The oldest of 13 children born in Lyman, Washington in a one bedroom homestead, to Robert Henry Metcalf and Irene Marion (Marco) Metcalf, she knew the meaning of responsibility and hard work at a very young age.
Nadine moved to Sedro-Woolley in 2007 to live with her widowed sister, Patsy, whom she resided with until her illness.
Nadine loved bingo, gambling on occasion, camping with her sister, and checking out the latest treasures at the 2nd Chance Thrift Shop in Sedro-Woolley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jaydine Parker; her husband of 26 years, John Place; and five brothers: Robert, Richard "Twig", William, Elmer and Harold Metcalf.
She is survived by her daughter, Maxine; three stepdaughters: Kathy, Sandy and Beverley; nine grandchildren: Audra and Johnathan Lutz, Batrina and Joseph Fisher, Jaylynn Stowell, Austin Watt, Dianna Jean "DJ" Elders, Geremy Parker and Daina Bussing; four brothers: Walter, Ronald "Doc", Mike and Patrick Metcalf; sister, Patsy Hinds; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and too many other family members and close friends to list.
A special thank you to Patsy Hinds and Judy Brock for helping take such great care of her and Alissa Jones, ICU Nurse at United General Hospital for taking such amazing care of Nadine and never giving up hope and pushing her to continue to fight.
Funeral Services will be held at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 2 pm. A potluck reception will immediately follow at Joy's Sedro-Woolley Bakery.
