Dr. Edmund Carl Kornfeld died at 6:15 p.m. on June 22, 2012. He was born February 24, 1919 in Philadelphia, a son of Julius Carl Kornfeld and Elsie (née Kieser) Kornfeld. His father was listed as Julius Karl Kornfeld on baptism record, 30 Nov 1890, Evangelical Lutheran (Bethany) Church, Philadelphia (born 9 Nov 1890 in Philadelphia).

He was a member of Faith Missionary Church.

Ed spent his entire professional career as an Organic Chemist at Eli Lilly and Company During his Lilly career, he arranged for soil samples to be sent to Lilly from outposts around the globe. Vancocin was isolated from a sample sent from Borneo. The antibiotic was found useful for the treatment of serious hospital infections resistant to treatment by penicillin.

His research also lead to the development of Permax® as a treatment for Parkinson's disease.

Kornfeld earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Temple University prior to attending Harvard, where he was the first of Dr. R. B. Woodward's graduate students to earn a Ph.D. Dr. Kornfeld played a key role in the synthesis of lysergic acid while working with R.B. Woodward, work which later earned Dr. Woodward the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1965.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; and siblings Mildred, Walter and Ruth.

He is survived by his brother, George Kornfeld; his 7 children; 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
