"The Ashtabula Sentinel" [Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH], 9 Dec 1843:

DIED In Monroe on the 18th ult*, DAVID NILES, Esq., a revolutionary pensioner, aged 85 years.

The deceased was a native of Rhode Island. At an early age his parents removed with him to Clarendon, Vt., where he was called into the service of his country. He came into the State in the year 1800 and settled in Monroe in this county in 1804; was the first justice ever elected in that town. He was an industrious, honest man, and has died highly respected by all who knew him. -- Cou.

*"Ult" indicates previously month. No tombstone found for either David or his wife, Lydia.

The illegitimate son of Annah Colvin, David Niles was raised in Rhode Island by his maternal grandparents, Jeremiah Colvin and Ruth Tucker, moving with them to Rutland Co., VT.

A Vermont Revolutionary War veteran, between 1777 and 1780, he served several stints in the Clarendon militia.

About 1783 he married Lydia [maiden name undocumented]; they were the parents of nine known children, the last two born in Ohio: Leonard, Lucy [Pool], Sanford, David Jr., Hiram, Erastus, Clarissa [Marks], Thomas Jefferson and Lorana.

A record of Lydia's death date has not yet been found.
