Nellie J. Burrow

Nellie J. Burow, 91, formerly of 205 Exchange St., and a resident of Presbyterian Manor, died Sept. 1, 1992, at Newman Hospital.

Before her retirement in 1966 and her return to to Emporia, Mrs. Burow taught for 30 years and was head of the Home Arts Department at Stamford High School in Stamford, Conn.

Nellie J. Brown, the daughter of Nemuel and Rhonda Kate Bitler Brown, was born Jan. 3, 1901, at Emporia. She graduated from Emporia High School, the Kansas Normal School and received a master's degree from Kansas State Teachers College.

Mrs. Burow was a member of the First Christian Church and the Bible study class at the church. She was member of the Weavers Guild, Parliament Club, National Education Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and Daughters of the American Revolution. She received her pilot's license in 1933.

She is survived by two daughters, Margy Gibson of Emporia and Madge Calvert of Olathe, a sister, Ethyl Gooch of Iola; five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, two sisters, a stepsister, a grandson and husband died earlier.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Williams Bowles, pastor of the church, will conduct the service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions to Disabled American Veterans or the Salvation Army may be sent to the funeral home.
