Celeste Lucia "Lottie" [Rubino] Sisto was the daughter of Vincenzo Rubino and Angela Maria Grieco. She was born on Strada Fontanelle in San Fele, Italy.

She came to the United States in November 1880 with her husband Donato Sisto and infant son Francisco "Frank" Sisto. With the family was a young Maria Rubino, probably a sister or niece of Lottie's, but history has lost her so far. The family arrived in New York, and probably went upstate to the Gloversville, Troy, or Utica area (where son James was born). They then went to Worcester, MA for several years (where Maurice and Angel were born). Sometime around 1889, the family permanently moved to Los Angeles. She had a total of 17 children, of whom 11 survived into adulthood. According to 1930 U.S. census records, four of her sons served during World War I.

Although her birth date is listed in many U.S. documents as 13 December 1861 (including her Social Security and California death records), her actual Italian birth certificate notes a date of birth of 13 December 1859. This year also matches the year of birth on her ship's arrival manifest.
