Jared Chapman Meek was born in June 1828 in Greenfield, Indiana to Jeremiah & Catherine (Williams) Meek. Jared had the distinction of being the first white child born in Greenfield. He worked as a blacksmith by trade.

Jared's father, Jeremiah Meek was born in 1776 Clems Chance, Old Frederick Co. Maryland. He died 4 September 1839 in Greenfield, Indiana. He is buried at the old city cemetery on South Street.

Jared's mother, Catherine Williams Meek was born 1 October 1802 in Currituck, North Carolina. She died in October 1874 in Greenfield, Indiana. The 1870 Hancock Co. Indiana census records Jared's mother Catherine Arnett and his step-father William Arnett living in his household.

Jared had 8 siblings, John Fielding, Larinda, Mary, Milton Williams, Rachel Ellen, Rebecca Ann, Sarah Eliza, and Theresa Meek.

Jared married Martha Crockett in 1852. To this union were born James A. b.1856, William F. b.1861 and Nancy A. Meek b.1865. Sometime after 1880, Jared's wife Martha Meek died.

In January 1885, Jared married Rebecca J. West in Hancock Co. Indiana. Rebecca died 21 May 1904.

On 17 November 1904, Jared married Margaret Curtis in Hancock Co. Indiana

Jared registered for military duty on 3 March 1863 to fight in the Civil War. Jared served as a Corporal in the Union Army, in Company G, the 5th Indiana Calvary.
