On the 42nd anniversary of the LDS Prophet Joseph Smith's birth, Dec. 23, 1847, his widow, Emma Hale Smith was married to Major Lewis Crum Bidamon by William Hana a Nauvoo Methodist minister.

A native of Virginia with little interest in religion Bidamon's family had moved to Ohio when he was 14.

During the Black Hawk War Major Bidamon was a commanding officer for Abraham Lincoln.

Before he married Emma and became the stepfather of her five children he had been married twice and was the father of two daughters.

The Major was known for his profanity, drinking and infedelity, nevertheless, Emma expressed affection for him and apparently accepted his shortcomings.

Emma's son, Joseph Smith III noted that "Pa Bidamon" was "six feet tall, with high forehead and splendid bearing, usually dressed very well and always wore a 'citizens' hat'... While his moral character might not be considered to be of the highest quality, he did possess a certain pride of manhood... and so far as the ordinary transactions of life are concerned, a desire to deal honorably with his fellow man."
