Sylvina Thomas was born May 1, 1748 in Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Benjamin Thomas and Jane Stetson. She was married in about 1766 to John Gilkey, son of James Gilkey and Grace Randall. Together they had at least 13 children. After they were married, the American Revolution began.
In the year 1780, a plundering body of British visited the Gilkey farm in John's absence, and drove his cattle into the water and shot three of them.
Sylvina begged for one of them for milk for the children and the British gave her one dead. After this, the Gilkey's moved to Cape Cod, but returned when the war was over.
Her husband was seized and their house plundered of its contents by the crew of the British ship "Shaving Mill". Sylvina Gilkey died on April 20, 1832 in Isleboro, Maine.
