Phineas Drake was a native of Canada, born in Fengal, Canada West, in 1843. He was the son of Thomas and Martha Drake, also natives of Canada. When he was a young boy his parents came to the United States and settled in Chillicothe, Illinois. He was a harness maker by trade and learned the business as an apprentice.

He enlisted as a Private on 30 Sept 1864 at the age of 18 years. Mustered in Co M 11th Illinois Cavalry on 8 Oct 1864 at Peoria, Illinois. Mustered out on 30 Sept 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee. The main work of his company was to tear up railroads, burn bridges, burn cotton gins, and to create havoc. He participated in a number of skirmishes.

Phineas came to Tabor in 1880 to work in the harnass shop of Charles Will. On 12 Jul 1882 he married Parthenia Scofield, a native of England. The had one son, William T Drake, who eventually settled in Chicago. Phineas was one of the organizers of the first G.A.R. in the city and one of its charter members.

Phineas and Parthenia lived in Omaha for a number of years and for a short time lived in Los Angeles, California. They returned to Fremont County between the 1920 and 1930 Census.

In August of 1843, a special day was set aside by the Tabor community to honor Phineas Drake on his 100th birthday. He was the last Civil War veteran in Fremont County, and the oldest citizen in Tabor. He participated in one war, and lived during three other wars fought by his country. He always maintained an active lifestyle, and to celebrate his 90th birthday he attended the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago.
