She was born March 28, 1918, in Oakland, Ark., the daughter of Ira and Ollie Dean Hollingsworth. She was a 1935 graduate of Flippin High School, Flippin, Ark. She warned her bachelor of arts degree in 1938 and her master's of science degree in 1950 from the University of Arkansas. In 1953, she received her Doctorate of Education, the first doctorate granted to a woman by the University of Arkansas. In 1955, Dr. Smith accepted a faculty position with Northwest Missouri State University, where she retired to Professor Emeritus in 1985.
On Sept. 3, 1938, she was united in marriage to E. C. Walker, Jr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1981. In 1987, she married Eldon C. Smith, who also preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 2000.
Dr. Walker Smith was the author of numerous professional articles and education materials, including a book on the testing of young children. She was active in professional organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma and the American Association of University Women, where she served in leadership positions and was nationally recognized for her role as sponsor of the Student National Education Association of NWMSU. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. In 1971, she was selected as Missouri Mother of the Year. Dr. Walker Smith was also well known in the community for her work with Avon.
One daughter, Cloidette Emery, preceded her in death on March 1, 2002.
Survivors include her son, E. C. Walker III, and his wife, Anne, of Austin, Texas; her daughter, Bettye Strade Hubbard, and husband, Cliff, of Kansas City; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
