Helen M. Crane, a retired Bovill grocery store operator, died of pneumonia Saturday at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane. She was 85.

She was born Feb. 1, 1908, at Harvard, Idaho, the daughter of George T. and Orpha (Canfield) Chrystal.

When she was a month old she moved with her family to Bovill, where she was raised and attended school. She graduated from Bovill High School in 1925.

After graduating from high school she attended nursing school at St. Luke's Hospital in Spokane.

In 1931 she moved to California and married Earl W. Crane on Dec. 21, 1931, at Oakland. The couple made their home in California and worked in construction.

In 1935, they returned to Bovill, where they owned Crane Grocery from 1953-1970. She operated the store while her husband worked for Potlatch Forests Inc., now Potlatch Corp. They retired in 1970.

After her husband's death in 1986, she moved to Spokane.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, and collecting Hummel figures. She also enjoyed camping and fishing.

She was a member of the Bovill Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Klea Copeland of Eagle, Idaho, and Doris Tower of Spokane; a brother, Francis Chrystal of Chico, Calif.; a sister, Doris Heinz of Stockton, Calif.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A brother died previously.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. The Rev. Mike Burr of the United Church of Moscow will officiate.

The family suggests memorials be given to the Bovill Presbyterian Church or the American Heart Association, c/o Charlotte Johnson, Rt. 1 Box 107, Genesee, Idaho, 83832.
