" ADAM WINFOUGH, an old resident
of Coalton, was hom Nov. 5,
1821, in Ross County, Ohio, a son
of Frederick and Mary (Adams)
Winfo ugh, the former of German
and the laller of English descent.
His lather came to America before
the Revolution and was a
soldier in the War of 1812. The
family came to Jackson County in
1823 and settled one and a hal(
miles from what is now Coalton.
Our subject was reared on a farm
and received such and education
as the schools of that day afforded.
In 1862 he was appointed enrolling
officer oC Washington Twp. by
the Marshal of Jackson County. He
also acted as Deputy Sheriff 2
years while W. H. Wilson was Sheriff.
In 1876-77 he was operating in
coal-supplying the surrounding
country and shipping about twenty
wagon loads per day. He lived on
the home fa rm till 1878 when he
moved to Coalton where he was appointed
Postmaster. In 1878 he engaged
in the mercantile business which he followed about 5' years-. After selling out he began specu-
1ating in real estate, his present
business. June 8, 1842, he was mar•
ried to Matilda, daughter of J acob
and Mary Anthony. They had 3
chiIdrcn--one living, Nancy c.,
wife of David Nunnemaker. Dc•
eeased al'c-Mal'tha J., who was
married to William Evans, dicd
May 17, 1883, and an infant. Mr.
Wmfough has been a member of
the Methodist Episcopal Church
about 40 years. "
