Died on the Coast Guard cutter USS Jackson and ordered, along with sister cutter Bedloe, to go to the assistance of torpedoed merchant vessel George Ade off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, in the midst of a powerful hurricane. Both cutters sank in the heavy seas. The Jackson lost 22 of her crew.
