The following is taken from "Composite History of Jackson County, Indiana: 1816 – 1988, Turner Publishing, p. 349."

"The ancestry of the Gillaspy family may be traced back before the American Revolution. The Gillaspy forefathers came from Scotland several years before the Revolution. The names of several are listed in archives and the Historical Department of the Virginia State Library as serving in the colonial army from Virginia.

The Gillaspys in Jackson County start with the second generation of American pioneers. During the early years of the nineteenth century (1817-1818) three brothers of the Virginia Gillaspys, Robert, William, and James, migrated to the western territory of the United States. They came through the Cumberland Gap,up the Daniel Boone trail through Kentucky and stopped in what is now Clark County.

It is recorded that Robert Gillaspy married Nancy Montgomery Oct. 12, 1812 in Clark County. He was the second person to file a claim in what is now Vernon Township in Jackson County in the year 1818. The claim was along the Muscatatuck River east of the site of the present town of Crothersville.

The seven children of Robert and Nancy were William, Elizabeth, Sarah, James, Robert Jr., Nancy, and Thomas."
