John was a son of George & Elizabeth Jane (Ward) DeLong, Sr.

Following from the research of the late John D. Baldwin III:

*3-1-1 JOHN FRANCIS DeLONG b. 1770; md. Sarah Winteringer.

JOHN FRANCIS (3-1-1) b. Apr. 24, 1770, possibly in Fannett Twp., Cumberland (now Franklin) Co., Pa where his maternal grandparents had taken land in 1766. It is possible that his father was in Northumberland Co., Pa (in the part which is now Centre Co.) but I find nothing to support that possibility. And nothing to support the tradition that he was born in the vicinity of Baltimore (nor for that matter, than his son Dr. John was).

1790 - living in his parents' home in that area of the recently formed Mifflin Co. which is now Centre Co.

1791 - Married about this time Sarah Winterringer, daughter of Barnett and Sarah (Chatwin). They were Quakers from Northampton Co., Pa. He appears as Bernard Winteringer on the passenger list of the ship "Pegg" 1753, age 21. They married at Old Swede's Church, Phila., Dec. 6, 1760. Winteringer's Will, Steubenville, Ohio 1810 includes mention of dau. Sarah and her husband John F. Sarah was born 1780 or later per both 1830 and 1840 censuses. This seems very late since three children were born by 1786. She was probably closer to J. F.'s age. Family records indicate she was born in Pa. but attended school in Culpepper Co., Md., and that she had a brother Jesse born in Md.

1795 - taxed Bald Eagle Twp., Mifflin Co., probably in that portion which today is Howard, Centre Co., PA.

1797 - the census records of 1850, 60, 70 for daughter Effey should be checked to determine her birthdate. Until that is done, I will question the tradition she was born in Md.(YES- censuses say born Maryland.../rwd)

1799 - it is not known whether he was with his father's family in Ohio Co., (W) Va. There is supposedly a land grant in Guernsey Co., Ohio which says he was late of Shenandoah Co., Va. Perhaps he was there while his father was in the NW Va. panhandle but I am disinclined to accept it without better documentation.

1802 - He probably arrived in Ohio at the same time as his father. His son John in 1850, 1860 and 1870 reported himself of Ohio this same year. This evidence certainly overrides an untraced tradition he was born near Baltimore, and son Jerome's 1880 census records claiming a Pa. father.

18__ - I have a note that John F. received a 100 acres tract during this period in the Duck Creek Donation Tract in Washington Co. This is most likely a misreading of the entry for his uncle Jonathan (3-6) who did receive 100 acres there and who was a settler there.

1810 - little survives of this Ohio census.

1811 - bought land May 29 at Dille's Bottom, still Belmont Co. from David Lockwood.

1812 - settled by this date in Beaver Twp., Guernsey (now Noble) Co. Note his father bought in Wayne Twp., now Noble Co. in 1811.

1812 - Colonel, 1st Regt., Ohio Militia, War of 1812.

1815 - On Oct. 11, John and Sarah sold Belmont Co. land, witnessed by Edward Carpenter.(See disc. for marr. of dau Sarah).

1815 - On Dec. 19, he purchased 160 acres in Belmont-? from David and Elizabeth Lockwood for $317, sold it same day to Fish Benjamin.

1819 - an original member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Beaver Twp.

1820 - Beaver Twp., still Guernsey 210110/02010. This erroneously puts him under 45.

1826 - Land grant Guernsey Co. Range 7, Twp 8, Sect. 3.

1830 - ditto

1830 - Guernsey census 000210001/000l00l. He had just turned 60.

1835 - he was a delegate to the Democratic Convention Aug 22 (Guernsey Times), resident of Beaver Twp. The same paper (same edition?) mentions John Delong living on the road from Barnesville, Belmont Co., to Monroe Co. This could be subject, his son or his nephew.

1840 - His will March 30, proved Cambridge, Guernsey Co. Apr 4. He was buried Catholic Cem., Batesville, now Noble Co., OH.

Children:

3-1-1-1 SARAH DeLONG born prob. Pa. prob. ca 1792 (no room in family to be much younger yet md in 1812). She md. June 2, 1812 Edward Carpenter per K. Lingenfelter who says the original. The transcript in the WRHS Library Cleveland says Richard Carpenter and Mar. 23, 1812. Perhaps the transcriber inadvertently telescoped two marriages. Note Edward Carpenter was witness to an 1815 land sale by Sarah's father. K.L. said Edward and Sarah were of Leneca Twp, Guernsey Co. I do not know the connection if any between this Edward and the older Edward of Londonderry, Guernsey Co. b. 1761 who married Catherine (4-1-1) Delong of an entirely different Delong family. Edward of Seneca Co. was not Edw. & Catherine's son Edward Jr. who was born 1802.

*3-1-1 JOHN FRANCIS DeLONG b. 1770; md. Sarah Winteringer.
