Son of Army SGT Lee Conway, WWI field artillery veteran, and Elizabeth Conway.

Enlisted in the Army in 1952. Graduated from Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning with the Class of 1957. Service #O-94578.

Deployed to Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces. Served as an infantry unit commander with Detachment A-253. Operated out of Forward Operating Base 2 in Kon Tum Province.

Killed during a combat reconnaissance patrol in the central highlands. Inserted by helicopter & advanced through the dense jungle. Engaged by heavy enemy automatic machine gun fire. Assaulted larger enemy force in the Ia Drang Valley. Directed evasive action to regroup his unit. Mortally wounded. Remained behind to cover the unit's withdraw.

Unsuccessful search & rescue effort the following day. Unable to locate remains. Found evident he had been dragged away.

Posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross & received the Purple Heart.

Medals/Badges included: Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge & Master Parachutist Badge.
