BUMGARNER, Sister Rose Elizabeth DELHI TOWNSHIP, OHIO - - June 28, 2012-Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Rose Elizabeth Bumgarner died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at the age of 81, in Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. She was born Elizabeth Alice Bumgarner on October 4, 1930, in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Clarence and Louise (Garry) Bumgarner. Sister Rose Elizabeth Bumgarner was a Sister of Charity for 63 years. The Community of Charity was part of Sister Rose Elizabeth's life from a young age; she was taught by the Sisters of Charity from first through 12th grades at St. Joseph, and Catholic Central High School, all in Springfield, Ohio. She earned the Bachelor of Science in Education from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati. Ohio, in 1962. Sister Rose Elizabeth began her teaching ministry at St. Saviour, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1950. Sister's 30 year education ministry took her to: Guardian Angel, Detroit, Mich.,(1951 - '53 & 1956 - '57); St. Helen, Saginaw, Mich., (1953-'56); Queen of Martyrs, Birmingham, Mich., (1957 - '60), St. Michael, Findlay, Ohio, (1960-'66); St. Raphael, Springfield, Ohio, (1966- '68); Holy Angels, Sidney, Ohio, (1968 - '80). The last 10 of those years she served as elementary principal. Sister Rose Elizabeth chose a new direction for her ministry in 1981 after completing the 'Active Spirituality for the Global Community' program at the College of Mount St. Joseph. She became a house mother for Birth, Education, Training and Acceptance (BETA), a non-profit organization that aids pregnant, young women in crisis, located in Orlando, Fla.. She ministered in that capacity for the next 18 years, transitioning to serve as director of mentors and tutors at the center, and then as a volunteer until 2005. In her jubilee reflections Sister said of this ministry: "Many young women came and went during those years - each was such a part of my life. It seemed that the Holy Spirit guided me there to be present to the young mothers to be - to love and not to judge". The current President and CEO of BETA, Ruth Patrick, sent the following remarks: "We could never adequately express the enormous impact that Sister Rose had at BETA Center for more than two decades, especially in her role of House Mother to the young mothers in our BETA house residence. She gave them loving guidance and also created a stable 'home' for them - a gift that many teens had never had before. Sister Rose's legacy at BETA will last forever; she will always be part of our BETA 'family'". In 2005 Sister Rose Elizabeth retired to the Motherhouse, offering many hours of service to the residents in Mother Margaret Hall and the Motherhouse Gift Shop. Sister Rose Elizabeth is survived by her five sisters as well as two brothers, along with many nieces and nephews. Her sister Mickey Bumgarner preceded her in death. Visitation for Sister Rose Elizabeth Bumgarner will be held from 2 -3 p.m., Monday, July 2, 2012, in the Heritage Room of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Motherhouse, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio, followed by Mass of the Christian Burial at 3 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will be in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
