Marcilius Abel was born in Deidesheim, Germany on January 23, 1808. He was christened at St Ulrich's Catholic Church. As was generally the custom, it is believed that he learned the trade of being a Tailor at an early age from his father. On August 26 1834 he was married to Johanna Muench. The many wars, a changing economy and the search for a better life for his family led him to make the decision to leave his homeland and sail to America.

Cincinnati City directories seem to indicate that Marsilius and his family arrived in America from Deidesheim, Germany in about 1857. His son George is listed in 1858 as a tailor and merchant of dry goods at 930 Row Street in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. By 1861, the family had relocated both their tailor shop and their home to 969 Central Avenue in what is today referred to as the Brighton / Camp Washington section of downtown Cincinnati. Their back of their home abutted the old Miami and Erie Canal which followed the path of what is now Central Parkway. In the late 1800's the canal was being largely replaced by the railroad and was scheduled to be filled in. However the goverment provided a grant for Cincinnati to develop a subway system that was to serve the residents. It was initially designed for travel from downtown Cincinnati to Norwood. However escalating construction costs and poor management eventually led to the project being cancelled. The subway tunnels and stations were covered over and the area was paved and eventually became Central Parkway. Over the years there were many ideas for what could be done with the unfinished tunnels and stations but they have remained unused.
In later years Marsilius and Johanna continued to live with his family on Central Avenue. At some point he contacted Tuberculous or " Consumption" as it was originally called. It is believed that his illness kept him from working a full schedule at the tailor shop and when he was there his duties kept him working in the back room away from the public. Marsilius died on September 26, 1869 at the age of 61 years. He is buried at the Spring Grove Cemetery in section 81 lot 26, grave number 4.
