THOMASVILLE Evelyn (Manley) Chamberlain, wife of Rev. Charles Chamberlain died in Thomasville, NC on Thursday June 28th after living in the Piedmont Crossing Retirement Community for 15 years. She was 88 years old. Evelyn was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Barberton, Ohio. The only child of Walter & Anna Manley, she graduated 2nd valedictorian from high school and attended Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where on scholarship, she majored in History with a minor in English. There she met an upperclassman, Charles. She transferred and graduated from Ohio State while Charles was attending seminary in Chicago. They married one week after her graduation, and have recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Charles, 90 survives her, living at Piedmont Crossing. Evelyn and Charles have lived a wonderful life together, and experienced a wide range of Church fellowships including Yates City, Illinois (their first home together and her first high school history teaching assignment), Glens Falls, NY (serving 5 country churches), Leadville, CO and Camden, NY. They moved to a large church in Amherst, NY and stayed for 13 years while her four children were growing up. Charles was called to a non-parish associate conference minister position in New Jersey, and they move to Upper Montclair NJ where they purchased their own home for the first time. While serving on many church committees, leading fellowships, and supervising learning centers, in Montclair, Evelyn chose to work in a neighborhood pharmarcy, and received a great medical education that has served her well over the years 9including summers off!). During extended summer vacations, the family primarily camped throughout Canada and the United States (40+ states). After years of camping, dreams of a summer log cabin with a rushing stream and pine woods in Castleton, Vermont became a reality. When a position was offered, Charles and Evelyn relocated fulltime to Vermont, where Charles served as Conference Minister the United Church of Christ, living in Shelburne, VT for 10 years. She was the office manager at the local Beltone Hearing Aid franchise. As retirement approached, Evelyn insisted on warmer weather, and after a well researched journey, a move was made south to Chapel Hill, NC. They enjoyed the advantages of summers in Vermont, and winters in NC. A transition about 10 years later brought them to Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville, NC where they built a broad group of friends and wonderful sense of community. During retirement they occasionally enjoyed international travel. With friends, she and Charles traveled (primarily without scheduled itineraries!) to Russia, Scandinavia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Yugoslavia/Croatia (her mother's birthplace). Evelyn enjoyed being an armchair sports fan for the North Carolina teams, and was a long term member of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization). Evelyn was a mother of four, and grandmother of four, encompassing a wide range of ages. The grandchildren are 43, 40, 18 and the youngest is seven! Surviving children are David (Terry) of Chestnut Ridge, New York, Cathy of Vermont, Tim (Monique) of Washington DC, and Jen (Chris) of Centreville, VA. And surviving grandchildren are Mathieu (Keisha) of NYC, Derek (Miki) of San Francisco CA, Steven and Logan Day of Centreville, VA. As children, we would share these comments about our mother: many left handed jokes: we were the warmest dressed kids on the block because she was cold; she ate LOTS of chocolate, and was a voracious reader of mysteries. A Memorial Service led by Rev. Julie Peeples of Greensboro Congregational UCC was held at Piedmont Crossing Unity Place on Sunday July 1st. The family suggests that those wishing to make memorial gifts consider the Greensboro Congregational United Church of Christ, 400 W.
