Although the death date on the stone is 1889, the following account appeared in the Amenia Times on Monday, Sept 13, 1886:

Last Thursday morning, Mary Bumster, daughter of John Bumster, a girl fifteen or sixteen years of age, boarded the train at this station, intending to get off at Colemans. When the conductor came along she told him her father worked on the track, and as was customary he passed her. She did not inform her of her destination, so when Coleman's was reached the train made no stop , as there was no one there to get on the train, and as far as the conductor knew, no one was getting off. When the girl saw that the train was not stopping, she arose from her seat near the door, walked out upon the platform and before anyone could reach her, jumped from the top of the platform. She struck the safety log on the side of the track just north of the station and was almost instantly killed from spinal injuries. The girl worked in the family of Caroline Barton, living near Coleman's Station, and had promised to surely return on Thursday morning to give Mr Barton's family an opportunity to attend the fair, and this anxiety to keep her word is supposed to have caused the rash act.
