Enlisted in Company D of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years. Reported missing in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 2, 1863, but actually captured and taken prisoner. Released from Belle Isle Prisoner of War Camp on August 11, 1863. Returned to regiment on September 4, 1863. Re-enlisted on December 29, 1863. Promoted to Sergeant. On detached service with Company E of the First Michigan Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864, Petersburg, Virginia. Wounded in action on May 5, 1864, at Wilderness, Virginia. Discharged to accept promotion as Captain in Company I of the 123rd U.S. Colored Infantry on January 20, 1865. Mustered out of service on October 16, 1865.
