Alexis Geneva Knox was born in Enid, Oklahoma, on September 27, 1983. She departed this life on April 17, 2006, in Cashiers, NC, as a result of an automobile accident. In Oklahoma City, Alexis attended Heritage Hall School, where she was chosen as outstanding sophomore and the first Heritage Hall student to study abroad. She was completing a degree in women's studies at Barnard College in New York City. At Barnard, Alexis was actively involved in numerous academic, political and women's issues. She was one of a select group of Barnard students invited to participate in the Centennial Scholarship Program and was twice the recipient of the Barnard Student Government Leadership Award. Alexis worked for the Sanctuary for Families, was a member of the Columbia University's Sexual Misconduct Committee and was an anti-violence peer leader and advocate. She was selected to attend the Young Women's Task Force in Washington, DC, and chosen as the Task Force's regional director, NY chapter. Alexis was recently an intern for NY Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and an assistant at Gloria Steinem's Ms. Foundation for Women. Alexis is survived by her mother Susan, father Alec and sister Elizabeth. She is also survived by grandparents L. Wendell and Mary A. Knox, of Edmond, uncle Steve Knox and wife Renee, of OKC, uncle David Knox of Atlanta, GA, and cousins Austin and Lily Knox. Other survivors include Joan Ligon of Wewoka, Pat Nardy of Cashiers, NC, and dear family friend Pat Gellespie of Enid. She will be dearly missed by all her family in Oklahoma and North Carolina. A memorial service in celebration of Alexis' life will be held at St. Paul's Cathedral, 127 NW 7th, Oklahoma City, on April 20 at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Barnard College, Office of Development, 3009 Broadway, NY, NY, 10027. Published in The Oklahoman from 4/19/2006 - 4/20/2006.
