Stanley A. Rusek 1915 - 2011 ADAMS Stanley A. Rusek, World War II Navy Veteran, of Williamstown Commons, formerly of 109 East Road, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 24, 2011, at the age of 96. He was born in Three Rivers on Feb. 3, 1915, and was the son of Albert and Julia Zamora Rusek. He attended St. Peter and Paul parochial school in Three Rivers. As a veteran of the Navy during World War II, Seaman First Class, he served on the SS William Carson, SS Whitehorse, SS Glorieta Liberty and the Van Dyke in the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaigns, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations, receiving the World War II Victory Commendation. Ports served were Palermo, London, Aruba, Panama Canal, New Guinea Islands, Okinawa, Pearl Harbor, Sicily and Venezuela from October 1943 until November 1945. He was employed at the former Berkshire Hathaway Mills, the Town of Adams Department of Public Works and, for 35 years at General Electric Co., Pittsfield as a painter in the maintenance department, retiring in 1977. He was a communicant of the former St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and the Parish of Pope John Paul the Great. He was a life member of the Burnett-Bednarz Post 1995 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Adams, the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society and the General Electric Quarter Century Club. His hobbies were gardening and mushrooming. His wife of 62 years, the former Sophie Oparowski, whom he married Sept. 4, 1939, died Jan. 2, 2001. He leaves three daughters, Julie Tomasini and her husband, James, of Brewster, Sally Mercier and her husband, Gordon, of Adams, and Joan Cook of Adams; four grandchildren, Aaron Mercier and his wife, Renee, of Kensington, N.H., Michelle Mercier of Adams, Scott Tomasini and his wife, Patricia, of Land O' Lakes, Fla., and Eric Tomasini and his wife, Paula, of Melrose, and his two great-grandchildren, Sophie Grace and Jackson Mercier who were the light of his life. He was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Szurek. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Wednesday, June 29, at 11:30 a.m. from the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12 in the Parish Church of Pope John Paul the Great, McKinley Square. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 10 until 11:30 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Adams Ambulance Service, Elder Services or the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire through the funeral home.
